Manchester Record Fair at Common 02

February 15 - 7:00 pm till 11:00 pm

Hey if your into an analog sound storage medium consisting of a flat disc with an inscribed modulated spiral groove usually starting near the periphery and ending near the centre of the disc, then we have an event that you, yes you! may be interested in, across both virtual and real domains!

On the 15th of February Floats and Boats returns to Common in the northern quarter to host another record bonanza. Again inviting a fine selection of grizzled record merchants making the arduous trek from across the greater Manchester laden down with elaborate and desirable party discs from across the sonic spectrum for your grubby mitts.

Hi Tackle

Located above Hidden night club in the shadow of Strangeways prison, the Hi-Tackle record shop has been slinging top quality records both old and new of all styles, ranging from battered heavy early 90’s break-hardcore killers, to pristine modern funk bombs. Rarities and super slept on hits. Founded by Randy Marsh and with Ruf Dug on staff – expect plenty of tried and tested Wet Play bangers in the racks.

The Onotesla Shop
Born of the synergic combination between Manchester Stalwarts Gnod’s Tesla Tapes and Michael Holland’s Ono label, OnoTesla will be bringing all sorts of goodies and exclusives bits to Common. Curating anything from field recordings in Ethiopia to riotous industrial, its one for the eclectic collectors, OnoTesla varied releases are united by a common commitment to the left of field, operating on these fringes allows the room for a full and rich vision.

Garth BE (Sweet Sticky)

Last time round Garth’s stall supplied nearly everyone in the building with a piece of wax before the night was out! Casual collectors and vinyl junkies alike couldn’t help but delve into his his party bargins. Expect to see the sort of soul, jazz and funk deep cuts that will keep even the most avid sample searchers on their toes. Also keep your eyes peeled for copies of his much lauded HIPNOTONY album which came out last year on his own imprint Sweet Sticky.

M4 Records

None other than Manchester’s very own M4 records, the brainchild of Andrew Macca. Who will be bringing his hand curated selection of banging tunes! (for want of a better term)
His Manchester city centre based online record store has operated since 2014, supplying new and second hand vinyl records. Refined and across the board selections.

Jim Spratling, Eastern Bloc

After a last minute automobile malfunction kept Jim from joining in November we cant wait see what he has got in the crates this time round. Jim’s been working at the legendary Eastern Bloc shop, situated in Stevenson Square, for many years now, keeping its long legacy alive. The shop’s place in Manchester music history is so well documented it hardly seems worth mentioning but just in case you didn’t know, here is a list of former staff & customers: John Berry & Martin Price (808 State), Laurent Garnier, Mike Pickering, Graeme Park, Sasha, Chemical Brothers, DJ Marky, Anthony Shake Shakir, Pepe Bradock, Josh Wink, Ben Sims, Derrick Carter, Carl Cox, and Marcus Intelex.

Jim’s tastes range from the most peaceful, flowing jazz to high octane d’n’b rollers, whats more he will be selling from not only the Eastern Bloc stock but also his private vaults, so get in quick before the diggers raid the crates.

Next up punting that analogue goodness for all you punters is Paul Thornton proprietor of Dig Deep Records! Paul is a purveyor of fine funk, all styles are welcome in his store, the only distinctions made being quality and affordability.

Self proclaimed specialists in Disco, Nu Disco, Funk, Soul, Jazz, House, Afrobeat, Latin, Hip Hop, Techno, Boogie, Bass, Broken Beat, Nu Jazz, Breaks, and everything in between. With such a myriad of options theres something for the whole family, so slap that cuppa out yer nan’s mouth and drag her down with you, you never know she might even lend ya a fiver!

Rob Butler (Be With Records)

In the immersive dot-to-dot that is record collecting what could possibly link together such alien strands as Letta Mbulu, Ahmad Jamal, Arthur Russell and Kyle Minogue? Be With Records that’s what! One-man reissue juganought, Rob Butler has for the last 5 years been steadily building up a reputation for picking out the crème de la crème of swerve ball dancefloor fillers. Never predictable, Be With’s back catalogue covers everything from, cosmic- kruatrock through to 90’s/00’s pop bangers, via jazz, soul and disco. Perhaps the label’s biggest hit of late was their repress of Letta Mbulu‘s 1983 album “In the Music… The Village Never Ends” which featured last year’s ultimate party heater “Nomalizo”. Who knows what Rob has got up his sleeves for the label next, drop in the 15th and you might just find out!
